Sarsaparilla refers to a carbonated beverage popular in the 1800s. Flavored with plant extracts, including sarsaparilla root sassafras, the dark brown soda tastes similar to root beer. In 1964 the FDA banned the use of sassafras in commercial food and beverage products.
The results of my quest to find out what I could about my bar tray indicate that there was not a sarsaparilla soda brand named Colonel Goodfellows. '"Refreshing millions since 1863 ", as it says on the tray, is part of the lithograph created for this reproduction of an 1800's bar tray.
The lettering styles and colors work well with the other Victorian 'come back' items of the 1970s - Gibson Girl (Coca-Cola), Yardley Cosmetics, Gunne Sax, Laura Ashley, 1928s Jewelry Company, to name a few. So, while this tray has value as a vintage 1979 entertaining tray or home decoration, and to sarsaparilla fans and home soda makers, it does not have inherent value as a piece of advertising memorabilia.
